11 Things to Know About Disney Castaway Cay 2024

While this is no longer a group race, thanks to the pandemic, you can still run the Castaway Cay 5K—and you’ll still receive a coveted finisher’s medal. You run the race on your own time while on the island, then log into your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to record your time. Repeat runners will be delighted to know that the medal changes each year. There’s so much to do on the island that many guests are surprised to learn that it is only 3.1 miles long and 2.2 miles wide, spanning 1,000 acres. Still, it can be a lot to navigate when you have kids and beach gear in tow, which is why there’s free open-air shuttle service around the island. Even though the island is home to an airstrip dating back to the 1960s, there are no commercial flights into or out of Disney’s island.

New Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Eleuthera. Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area.

What Is the history of Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island?

Scuttle Cove offers splash pads, games and activities, but no pool or beach access. Castaway Cay is a family-friendly paradise filled with all sorts of activities for guests of all ages, whether you’re traveling with toddlers or teens. The island’s family area is located just a short walk or even shorter tram ride from the dock, making it easy to get to and from the ship, a boon for families with little ones.

things Disney got right about their private island Castaway Cay

You’ll want to book these ahead of time using the Disney Cruise Line app, as they’re very popular. After disembarking, Cast Members are on hand to give out beach towels, so you don’t need to bring a towel from the ship. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult from their own stateroom when disembarking at any port of call. A parent or guardian may complete a “Traveling with Minors” form during online check-in to allow another specified adult to accompany their child off the ship. On the ship, they may complete a Debarkation Authorization for Minors Form at Guest Services to allow the child to leave the ship on their own. Guests under 18 leaving the ship on their own need a photo ID and Key to the World card at every port except Castaway Cay, where they only need a Key to the World card.

Disney is developing Lighthouse Point on the southern tip of Eleuthera, a Bahamian island, as a second exclusive port of call. The island is known for its stunning pink sand beaches, and Disney is working closely with Bahamian artists and advisors to best honor the natural beauty and culture of the Bahamas. Mail sent from the small turquoise-colored building is marked with a special postmark and Bahamian stamps that are unique to Castaway Cay. If the post office isn’t open while you are there, you can buy Bahamian postage on the ship at guest services, and they will mail your postcard for you. Bring an underwater camera (or live on the edge and use a waterproof phone pouch) to snap shots of the Snorkeling Lagoon’s undersea statuary.

How much does it cost to go to Castaway Cay?

Lines can get long, so plan accordingly, especially if you have hot and hungry little ones in tow. The Grand Family Cabana cost $1,127.50 for up to 10 people and could accommodate up to 16, with each additional guest charged $56 per person. Fresh fruit and light snacks are provided, as are unlimited soda and bottled water. You can press a button in your cabana to call them if you don't see anyone and want to order a drink or get your soda, water or snacks restocked. Currently, it's not offered as a group activity, but you can do it on your own, on your honor, and pick up a medal back at the bike rental booth.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Castaway Cay has a pier, so your visit likely won't be canceled due to wind that might make tendering unwise. However, if conditions are too dangerous for the captain to safely dock, your call might be canceled or rescheduled. Average high temperatures are in the low 80s in winter and low 90s in summer.

Castaway Cay has its own post office

Watching the movies later in the evening ensured that I did not miss any of the fun and events that happened each night onboard. I was very surprised to discover that there seemed to be nearly as many opportunities, if not more, for passengers onboard to meet their favorite characters. Meeting Disney characters may not be for everyone, but for those who do enjoy the chance to shake hands and take a picture with their favorite Disney character, there will be plenty of opportunities. First, in addition to the “Disney Bubble,” we talked about in #2, the entire vacation is sprinkled with Disney magic. From hidden Mickeys in the décor to the amazing attention to every single detail, to fantastic family-friendly shows, there isn’t a moment you won’t feel you’ve entered somewhere magical.

Instead, they sleep in their staterooms during the night and explore the island during the day. Disney Cruise ships usually dock with the stern (back) of the ship facing against the island. Because of how the pier is positioned, this means that rooms on the starboard (right) side of the ship are most likely to have a view of Castaway Cay.

Kids ages 3-12 can enjoy Scuttle’s Cove, a secure and supervised children's activity area offering sand castle building, scavenger hunts, and more. Kids must be signed up with the onboard youth club before they visit, and admission is complimentary and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Island youngsters will especially love Monstro Point, a play area that looks like a giant whale bone excavation site.

The Castaway Cay 5K used to be at a set time in the morning, but now guests can complete the 5K in their own time. There are still signs at the starting point and throughout the path, which goes down the airstrip, to direct guests who are running. Finishers can visit Guest Services to collect a (rubber) medal, and merchandise is available to purchase.

All in all, we expect Lighthouse Point to be a great destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. Based on the description, it sounds like DCL and Imagineering have learned lessons from what worked and didn’t with Castaway Cay, and this is essentially the next generation of that. It appears that practical improvements have been made, giving Lighthouse Point a greater sense of fun and luxuriousness, along with the increased emphasis on authenticity. That’s just my impression based on the concept art and press release, though. Think of Disney Castaway Cay as a Choose Your Own Beach Adventure kind of place. From where you decide to hang out to how you want to get around, there’s something for everyone.
